2024 saw more riders than ever start The Perfidious Albion, which remained unchanged from the 2023 route – keeping the manned checkpoint in north Wales. After several years of weather extremes, this edition was more typically British, with riders experiencing alternating sunshine and showers throughout the ride.
The challenging route and frequent rain certainly took its toll on both riders and bikes, leading to a high number of scratches. It also meant we had a dramatic changing of the lead at the final checkpoint, after Alexander Spoelstra’s front brake failed with him only a few hours from the finish. He was forced to wait until a bike shop opened the next day, still managing to secure third place.
TPA24 also saw our “most experienced” ever finisher in the form of Charles Hyatt, who put riders several decades his junior to shame by making the cut off with a few hours to spare. Despite storms in Wales killing his Garmin and almost forcing him to scratch, he pressed on and put in a big final day to secure his stamped t-shirt.
